MOSCOW — The Soviet Ministry of Defense announced today that Soviet Union border guards engaged in a brief skirmish with an unidentified armed group in the disputed border region on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea in the early hours. The engagement, which reportedly lasted approximately 20 minutes, occurred in close proximity to the site where a small flying object, which had earlier violated Soviet airspace, was downed.
According to the Ministry of Defense, reconnaissance units of the border guard, deployed based on detections of "non-optimal patterns" by the State Automation System (
OGAS) in the area, encountered the armed group. The group is believed to have been attempting to recover debris from the previously downed small flying object. The skirmish was swiftly suppressed, with no Soviet casualties reported. The identity or affiliation of the armed group has not been disclosed, but border guards continue their vigilance in the surrounding area.
This incident follows ongoing border tensions between the Soviet Union and the Islamic Communist Command (ICC). The ICC had claimed the previously downed small flying object was dispatched by a "humanitarian situation survey mission," a claim rejected by the Soviet Union. This latest minor clash underscores the additional burden on Soviet border defenses, amidst internal disruptions caused by OGAS's "critical anomaly" and escalating external pressures.
