As part of a cultural exchange program organized by the Pacific Environmental Protection Alliance, the SAU has proposed a new theatrical form integrating "Oceanic Ecologism" and the "Pachamama Principle." This distinct style utilizes natural environments or agricultural lands as its stage, rather than traditional theater spaces, and emphasizes collective participation by the audience in a celebratory, festive format. The SAU delegation asserts that this form of theater aims to "reaffirm the solidarity between humanity and nature, and strengthen community bonds." However, the director of Wellington's prominent "Emerald Stage" theater company expressed "concerns that traditional theatrical arts are being devalued, and that specific ideologies are being introduced under the guise of cultural exchange." Some critics have also pointed out the potential for "excessive intervention by SAU's soft power, which could undermine New Zealand's unique cultural diversity." Conversely, environmental protection groups and certain young artists have voiced support for the initiative, hailing it as "an innovative endeavor that transcends existing forms and resonates with New Zealand's identity as an oceanic nation." Currently, discussions surrounding this theatrical form remain confined to limited circles within Wellington, with no widespread protests or major disruptions reported. Nevertheless, as the SAU's cultural strategy deepens its penetration into the ANZ region, it suggests that conflicts over cultural identity may persist.
