MARJAN, Al-Safir Province – A computer-controlled projection system displaying sacred verses on a monumental calligraphy sculpture, installed on the facade of the newly completed People's Service Bureau in the provincial city of Marjan, experienced a malfunction. The system, intended to dynamically render verses from the Holy Quran, was a symbol of the “Literalism” movement within the Islamic Communist Bloc’s cultural policy. Witnesses reported that sections of the projected verses flickered erratically and displayed distorted characters for several hours. In response to the anomaly, dozens of traditionalist residents gathered in front of the building, staging protests and condemning the incident as “blasphemy by machine.” The residents asserted that the computer had misinterpreted the sacred text and demanded the permanent deactivation of the system. The People's Service Bureau management stated that the system malfunction was due to “temporary circuit instability” and announced that restoration efforts were underway. However, this incident is expected to add a new dimension to the ongoing theological debate surrounding computer-aided interpretations of sacred texts, a controversy already intensified by the continued malfunction of the “Sacred Verse Display Calculators” in Umm Qasr and discussions within the Grand Islamic Communist Council of Scholars. Some theologians are now calling for a stricter re-evaluation of the potential for computing machines to compromise the sanctity of sacred verses.
