In response, the US Department of State countered that the SAU was responsible for refusing inspection, citing suspicions that the cargo allegedly transported by the SAU vessel included items for purposes other than 'environmental monitoring.' Currently, naval vessels from both sides are converging in the waters surrounding Lake Erie, and tensions have reached an extreme level.
