BUSAN – Patrol vessels from the Korean Defense Force and the Japanese Coast Guard were involved in a hours-long standoff in close proximity in the eastern Tsushima Strait on the 17th. The incident follows an accidental firing by a Korean Defense Force patrol vessel towards a Japanese fishing boat in the same area last month, during a period of heightened vigilance by both nations. According to eyewitness accounts, the Korean Defense Force patrol vessel 'Sowon' encountered the Japanese Coast Guard vessel 'Hatsukaze' while on patrol in an area reportedly near the boundary of Japan's exclusive economic zone. Both vessels are believed to have exchanged radio warnings and shadowed each other at close range for approximately half a day. While no warning shots or direct engagements occurred, tensions are reported to have reached a critically high level. The Secretariat of the Far East Independent States Alliance (FEISA) issued a statement the same day, urging both nations to de-escalate the situation and emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation among member states.
