The Azotea City Council announced on the 7th local time its decision to review certain clauses of the “Pachamama Greenbelt Initiative,” a large-scale agricultural plan promoted by the South American Union (SAU). This decision follows strong concerns from local residents and environmental groups regarding the plan’s impact on traditional agricultural practices and the local ecosystem. The City Council specifically indicated a preference for prioritizing local land use rights and principles of sustainable agricultural practices, particularly concerning recommendations for the expansion of single-crop cultivation. The SAU’s Regional Agricultural Development Council expressed regret over the Azotea City Council’s decision but stated that the overall impact on the plan would be limited. The Council emphasized its intention to continue discussions with local governments to seek a cooperative resolution.
