TOKYO – During the regular session of the Far Eastern Independent Nations Union (FEINU) Council, the Philippine delegation formally requested the Japanese government to remove memorial symbols and change the name of a major port facility in Tokyo Bay, citing its historical connection to the former MacArthur Headquarters. The Philippines asserted that these memorials are "symbols of prolonged occupation and subservience, contrary to the spirit of genuine independence and self-determination." They maintained that rectifying the legacy of the former MacArthur regime is a crucial step towards the future of the Far Eastern region. In response, the Japanese delegation promptly rejected the demand. Japan expressed concerns over the substantial renovation costs and potential disruption to international trade that would result from renaming and removing symbols, emphasizing the facility's critical role in the capital region's logistics network and economic activities. Japan also alluded to the historical value of the facility and its role in infrastructure maintenance during the occupation period. The divergence in historical interpretation and political priorities between the two nations is expected to further deepen the rift within FEINU, casting a serious shadow over the future of regional cooperation.
